]]>
In the wake of the 2016 US presidential election, Twitter has been in the spotlight due to the alleged use of the network by Russian bots to influence the election.

Facing heavy scrutiny from the US Congress, Twitter recently announced a number of significant rule and policy changes designed to counteract some common uses and abuses of the Twitter system. Twitter announced policy changes on February 21, 2018 with rules going into effect 30 days later on March 23, 2018.

These policy changes are aimed at reducing the influence of spam across Twitter by limiting the ability of multiple twitter accounts to coordinate the spread and amplification of certain Tweets.

Twitter’s policy changes impact all Twitter users – not just the bad actors. So whether you are a Russian bot farm operating in St. Petersburg or an upstanding small business trying to market on social media, you are now subject to Twitter’s new rules.

New Twitter Rules

This means many common and effective tweeting practices relied on by legitimate Twitter users are no longer allowed.

For instance, if you manage more than one twitter account – you can no longer post the same or similar original content to those accounts. This limitation applies regardless of whether the Tweets are published to Twitter at the same time, or are scheduled/queued for future publication.

If you’re used to simultaneously publishing or scheduling tweets across multiple twitter accounts, you’ll no longer be able to do this. Twitter removed this option from TweetDeck and all apps must follow by March 23.

Per Twitter: “One of the most common spam violations we see is the use of multiple accounts and the Twitter developer platform to attempt to artificially amplify or inflate the prominence of certain Tweets.”

Additionally, Twitter is now stepping up enforcement of other policies related to duplicate content. Twitter rules prohibit duplicate updates on a single account. This rule was previously only loosely enforced by Twitter. For instance, Twitter previously blocked identical posts to the same account only if the posts were attempted within the same 12 hour period. Twitter is now poised to enforce this policy much more aggressively by restricting all duplicate content posting, even if it the posts are made even days or weeks apart.

If you are like many major brands, and recycle the same tweet more than once on a single Twitter account – you’re now in danger of suspension or termination from Twitter.

How do these changes impact your use of dlvr.it?

Most importantly, our goal is to help our users make sure they are playing by Twitter’s new rules. We want our help our users avoid any problems with Twitter that could lead to their accounts being suspended or blocked.

To that end, we’re making some changes to dlvr.it and the way we handle posting to Twitter. We’ll be rolling out these changes next week.

You may connect only one Twitter account to an RSS feed for automated posting

— You will no longer be able to connect more than one Twitter account to a single RSS feed for automated posting.
— If you have any feeds set up for automated posting to more than one Twitter account, we’ll deactivate posting to Twitter.
— We are working on tools to enable you to post the original content to a single account and then retweet out to other accounts you own. This will be available soon. Stay tuned!

You may select one Twitter account when posting or scheduling content

— When posting or scheduling tweets, you’ll be limited to posting or scheduling that update to a single twitter account at a time.
— You may build another, differentiated post for posting to another Twitter account.

No EverQueue posting to Twitter

— We’ll no longer support automated recycling of original posts to Twitter via EverQueue.
— You will not be able queue additional EverQueue items for your Twitter accounts and any existing Twitter EverQueue posting will be deactivated.
— We’ll continue to support EverQueue posting to Facebook and other social networks.

Automated HashTags

— We will limit the practice of automatically including hashtags on Tweets.
— You can continue to manually add hashtags to posts, However, the automated addition of hashtags as prefixes or postfixes to Tweets will be deactivated.

What’s next?

We understand these changes may not be welcomed by all of our users. But the new Twitter policies apply evenly to all Twitter users and apps – even if you’ve been responsibly using Twitter for upstanding purposes. The goal of these changes to dlvr.it is to ensure all our users continue to play by Twitter’s evolving policies.

There may be some pain in the near term as we all adjust to the new Twitter rules. In the long term, these updates may result in a better Twitter experience for law abiding Twitter users. Expect adjustments and tweaks to Twitter’s policies as these new changes take effect. We’re closely monitoring the situation and will be updating dlvr.it’s features as Twitter tweaks and clarifies their policies.

We’ll be making announcements in the coming days and weeks regarding some fresh new features to help our users navigate the new Twitter landscape. Stay tuned!

What do you think?

We’d love to hear your thoughts on the Twitter policy changes. Will these new rules result in a better Twitter experience? Will these policy changes keep unsavory actors from gaming Twitter? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

]]>
Even in today’s social media focused world, email marketing is still one of the best ways to reach customers. Today we are going to walk you through how to curate content to build a massive email list.

What is Content Curation?

Content curation is the process of sorting through the vast amounts of content on the web and then presenting it in a meaningful and organized way around a particular theme.

If you are a frequent reader of our blog then you know I love the concept of smart automation.

If you are a small business with a marketing team of one, you will especially appreciate how you can grow an email list by reusing the same content you are already curating and sharing on social media.

“Why on Earth Would I Send a Customer Away?”

via GIPHY

If you are new to content curation, then you may be asking yourself that very question. Why would I send a perfectly good customer away from my site?

If you love someone, set them free. If they come back they’re yours; if they don’t they never were. – Richard Bach

5 Reasons to Curate Content

While there are excellent reason to curate content, what is most surprising is how most brands ignore these benefits and only focus on how curation can take readers away from their own website.

Reason #1. Establishes credibility and trust

It’s no secret that consumers rely on recommendations from their peers, but they also crave information from other reliable sources. My providing your customers with this information you can then improve your brand’s credibility. When you curate content, you present the opportunity to back up your claims with outside research that supports them. In addition, over time this will build a stronger relationship with your readers as they learn to trust the knowledge you have to share.

Reason #2. Builds brand loyalty

When you curate content you show your audience that you care about the problems they’re facing. As a result, you’re taking the time to share information with them that doesn’t just toot your own horn. Furthermore, consumers feel loyal to brands that have their best interest at heart.

A real example: On May 12, we shared an article posted by Ragan.com titled, The right way to respond to negative online reviews. The article was spot on for our audience of small business owners who may face the same Yelp review issue.

Tweet on how to respond to negative reviews on Yelp

As a result, engagement on the tweet and click through to the article was 2x times greater than the typical engagement rate on our own posts!

Reason #3. Improves brand voice

A brand with a personality is much more likable than a brand that isn’t much more than a logo. As you curate content, it’s important to remember your own commentary, whether you share through your blog, social media or email newsletters. Your audience will begin to understand where your brand stands when it comes to industry tactics or best practices.

Reason #4. Inspires and delights

You don’t have to be all business all the time. It’s okay for a brand to share content solely for the purpose of entertaining its community as long as you truly understand your audience. You’ll be able to delight them with content that still makes sense for your brand.

Reason #5. Increases brand awareness

As you curate content from other brands and bloggers, it won’t take long for them to notice. As a result, often times they’ll repay the favor by thanking you in front of their audience or sharing your content as well.

However, it’s important to keep your content recommendations genuine. Don’t let ego stroking be your sole motivation. Consequently you’ll quickly lose the benefits of content curation.

Creating Original Content is Time Consuming

Content curation has been around for a long time however many brands have failed to see the benefits it does deliver.

The benefits and ROI of original content creation are evident. However, consistently creating original content can be:

  • Difficult
  • Time consuming
  • Expensive

Small businesses are feeling the pressure.

Consider these facts:

  • 62% of their time each month is allocated to content production (according to a Kapost survey)
  • 71% say they’re under pressure to create ten times more content to support all of the different social media channels (IDC study)
  • 85% are under pressure to create assets and deliver campaigns more quickly (the same IDC study found)

According to research by Nielsen, it’s best NOT to create original content all the time:

92% of consumers trust recommendations more than your originally created content.

Mari Smith – A Trusted Filter

Mari Smith is one of the world’s leading social media thought leaders with deep expertise in Facebook marketing. If you are a content curation doubter, let me introduce you to Mari Smith. Mari is a leading social media thought-leader who has a wealth of expertise in Facebook marketing. She is a Forbes’ Top Social Media Power Influencer (currently #4 of 100) and the author of a few Facebook marketing books.

Mari is the perfect example of how to build thought leadership around curated content. Most noteworthy is the massive following she built using content curation.

  • Curated Email Newsletter: 97,000 subscribers
  • Twitter Followers: 445,000
  • Facebook Fans: 167,000

Mari aggregates interesting and/or popular content around the subject of social media marketing. She finds the best of the best and then pulls it together in her weekly newsletter.

Each week, she sort through the huge pile of new social media blog posts, resources, articles, tools, tips and more … and hand pick just three of them to send via email.

When she finds an article she likes, she uses a bookmarklet to add it to her queue. Additionally, along with links she shares in her newsletter, she offers a brief comment or summary about the pieces.

While there are many reasons (as we highlighted above) small businesses should start a curated newsletter the most noteworthy reason in the eyes of Mari to“… build a significant audience over time, make appropriate offers, and generate revenue.

Curated newsletters are a chance for you to offer readers a vast variety of material you’ve hand selected for them. And with so much content published online, a curated newsletter has serious business value.

How to Curate Content Like a Pro

Creating and setting up a curated newsletter is simple often times taking less then 15 minutes.

Tools you will need:

  • dlvr.it
  • Email service provider (e.g., MailChimp)

Step 1. Choose your topic

According to Campaign Monitor, there are the two key things you should to consider when choosing your topic:

1. Audience Value – Most importantly, consider the needs of your audience. Because you have a target market you focus on, they will be most interested in specific types of content. The value of a curated newsletter for subscribers is the convenience of having all the best content about a particular subject selected and sent directly to them, so you need to make sure the topic you choose aligns with the types of content your target market is interested in.

2. Business Alignment – First of all, the goal of starting a curated newsletter is to keep your business top of mind while building thought leadership around your brand. Therefore, you won’t achieve these objectives if the content you curate isn’t aligned with the products and services your business provides.

Step 2. Gather relevant content with dlvr.it

Once you’ve established your topic, you need to find great content to share.

  • Once inside dlvr.it, click the ‘Curate’ tab
    • Type in a keyword
    • Point to a URL

Discover content to share from over 100,000 sources

  • Once content is pulled from the source, the curated items are displayed and most of all are easy to scan and review before and after publishing.
Painless Way to Always Have Fresh Content to Engage Fans and Followers - Content Curation by dlvr.it

Want to take curation to the next level? Install our quick capture browser add-on so you can quickly add content you discover to your newsletter queue.

Next: Create an RSS feed. We’ll be using this as a content source for your newsletter. If you followed the first point above and are adding curated items to social media, you will now also be queuing items for your curated newsletter! Talk about a time saver!

  • Click the social media icon at the top of the page (1)
  • Click the + icon (2)

Create Pins with dlvr.it - Step 1

  • Select the orange RSS feed icon from the list and follow the prompts to create an RSS feedWith a single click, you can publish from your content queue to any major social network.
  • Start adding items to the feed along with your comments. (***You may already be adding items to social media if you followed the steps outlined here so no need to duplicate the work).

dlvr.it automatically populates the newsletter link with a sample message (2) which then you can use as is or add additional commentary (1).

In just a few minutes you’ll have a list of stories to add to your newsletter. We automatically populate the social update with a sample message that you can use as is or add additional commentary.

Dlvr.it’s Pinterest for Business Tool Simplifies Pinning

Simplification #1: Cut Pinterest Pinning time in half

We often hear from small business owners that removing even one step in the social media sharing process is hugely beneficial.

Here’s an example of the typical workflow for sharing content on Pinterest:

  • Step 1: Find and download images to support a blog post
  • Step 2: Log into Pinterest
  • Step 3: Write a short description of the blog post for Pinterest
  • Step 4: Upload an image to Pinterest

With dlvr.it, you can skip the logging in and uploading steps, cutting your Pinterest Pinning timing in half!

With dlvr.it for Pinterest, there is no need to manually create Pinterest Pins – ever again!

For example, every blog post we create, we use dlvr.it’s smart automation tools to share the blog post on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and more.

  • Typically, we would create a Pinterest description and manually upload the supporting image and text to Pinterest. That is if we remember!
  • Often we create and schedule blog posts weeks in advance. We have to remember each day to upload the newest blog post image to Pinterest.

Instead, now we simply schedule Pinterest within dlvr.it.

Auto-magically, all our Pins go live at the same time the blog post goes live – even when they are scheduled weeks in advance!

This image was automatically Pinned using dlvr.it for Pinterest:

A point often overlooked about social media success is having a consistent flow of content. It is equally important to share that content at just the right time when your audience is most active. A good Social Media scheduling tool can be the difference in success with social media.

A HubSpot survey found that business and publishers that schedule social media updates generate 3 times as much activity compared to those who don’t schedule updates. Without proper scheduling, updates are compressed to only when you are online, causing you to miss visitors or potential customers who are active at entirely different times of day than you.

Best practices for Social Media Scheduling

Scheduling content for social media can be a productivity aid if used smartly. Scheduling content offers the flexibility to plan your message in advance and saves hours of time every week.

  1. Plan to plan: If you find you don’t have time to post to your channels every day, take 30 minutes at the start of the week to schedule updates. Set-up a reminder in your personal calendar to fill your content queue.
  2. Plan to plan – but not too far out: Scheduling does make you more productive however there will be some unforeseen tragedies and unfortunate events that occur. You want to avoid a social media faux pas and risk harming your reputation by posting inappropriate content. We suggest to plan your schedule 10 days out max to limit your risk. This also provides enough time to jump on relevant conversations that might start.
  3. Share during office hours: Depending upon your business and the type of content you publish, share content when you are available to respond to questions from your audience. This is particularly important for special promotions or time sensitive information. You want to be available to interact with your audience and answer questions.
  4. Consider different time zones: Is your audience in multiple time zones? Create multiple schedules to meet the expectations of audiences located in different time zones. Consider having timely content scheduled in each time zone to service customers during their optimal reading times.
  5. Schedule during prime times: The best times to post on social media is definitely a hot topic. Generally speaking, the schedule below reflects the peak time for each network. However, you know your audience best. You will have to find the peak times of day that have potential for the greatest impact from your posts. Use the schedule below as a general but good guideline.
Facebook – between 10 am and 4pm, Monday through Thursday.
Twitter – between 1pm and 3pm, Monday through Thursday.
LinkedIn – focus on posting before and after business hours, 7 am to 9 am and 5pm to 6pm, Tuesday through Thursday.
Google+ – 9am to 11am during your work week.
Pinterest – peak hours 2pm to 4pm and 8pm to 1am, on weekdays. The best time to pin items on Pinterest is on Saturday morning.

Scheduling posts is a not a set-it-and-forget-it task. Rather, set it and nurture it. Think of it like a garden. Your garden doesn’t need your constant attention but it does need weekly watering and weekly visits to insure all is well.

dlvr.it has teamed up with StockTwits to create a powerful one-click solution for public companies, investors, stock market professionals and traders to instantly share stocktwits_financial_web_reachimportant company information, ideas and investor intelligence with StockTwits influential community of 40 million investors across the financial web, including:

  • financial data
  • press releases
  • earnings calls
  • quarterly financial releases
  • company news & press
  • updates on corporate social responsibility programs
  • evangelize their company or offer an opinion on a particular stock

According to a recent study, 40% of Wall Street investors are already using social media as one of their key information sources. NIRI’s recent survey results supports the same findings; 52% of institutional investors use social media as part of their research process and “the vast majority of these respondents indicate that it has influenced their investment decisions at least occasionally.”

With social media playing an increasing role in investor communications, the addition of StockTwits to dlvr.it’s library of social media destinations, Investor Relations Officers can feel confident they can use one solution to communicate with multiple stakeholders – customers, employees, communities, analysts and influential investors across all the major social media networks.

The StockTwits implementation allows for the use of StockTwits innovative cashtags in addition to one of the more fun advanced features – sentiment analysis. Choosing this option will automatically post sentiment (#bullish or #bearish) based on item categories or hashtags.

What are Cashtags?

Cashtags are the “$” followed by the ticker symbol (example: Teslas’s cashtag is $TSLA). Cashtags are hyperlinked on both StockTwits and Twitter to other conversations about that stock.

The dlvr.it and StockTwits solution makes it easy to increase awareness and broaden access to company information:

  • Share industry and sector news/media coverage
  • Link to analyst reports and trade information
  • Share company news – new products, press releases, corporate social
    responsibility information
  • Elicit questions in advance of the quarterly earnings call
  • Live-tweets during annual meetings and analyst/investor days
  • Cross-post content throughout the financial web

Last week Facebook announced support for clickable hashtags on Facebook. This new feature makes it easier for Facebook users to discover relevant, timely content.

To tap into this discovery tool, businesses, publishers, and brands now need to include hashtags on Facebook posts. The addition of hashtags can amplify your content – making your posts more discoverable and visible across Facebook.

Why Hashtags on Facebook

Hashtags on Facebook
Hashtags turn topics and phrases into clickable links in your posts on your Timeline or Page. These links help people find posts about topics they’re interested in. To make a hashtag, write # (the number sign) along with a topic or phrase and add it to your post.

For example: I just saw the cutest puppy! #dogs

When you click a hashtag, you’ll see a feed of posts that include that hashtag. You may also see some related hashtags at the top of the page.

According to Facebook, please keep in mind:

  • You must write a hashtag as a single word, without any spaces.
  • You can include numbers in a hashtag, but punctuation and special characters (like $ and %) won’t work.
  • You can search for a hashtag using the search bar at the top of any page.
  • You’ll only see posts that were shared with you.

How to Add Hashtags on Facebook Posts – Automatically

dlvr.it can automatically add relevant hashtags to your Facebook posts. We’ll find your feed item’s category tags, and based on your rules; we’ll automatically add hashtags to your Facebook posts.

For instance, if your feed item has the category tags iPhone, Kittens, and Videos, you can configure dlvr.it to add the hashtags #iPhone, #Kittens, and #Videos to your Facebook post – automatically.

One important note: Your feed items must include category tags for dlvr.it to add hashtags automatically to your Facebook posts.
